Using Social Media to Share Black Friday Deals

I am excited to announce that I have been selected as one of 20 bloggers for the following project (see press release below). Besides blogging Black Friday deals I will be hitting the streets to interview shoppers and vlogging holiday shopping insights.

While some corporations continue to dabble in social media and question the ROI of these efforts. Consumers are setting the stage and determining how social media will provide them value. I believe this effort is an excellent example of how consumers are engaging in social media to empower their purchasing decisions.

So what are you waiting for? Let’s flex our combined power by using social media to get the best deals possible this holiday season!

Bloggers to Use Social Media to Share Black Friday Deals

November 25, 2009 – Bentonville, AR – Collective Bias, an interactive marketing firm that connects brands with shoppers at the store shelf by facilitating conversation and building relationships, has partnered  with Whrrl, a location based mobile application that lets people capture and share the stories of their lives one moment at a time, to create a unique platform that helps shoppers find the best deals on Black Friday.

Twenty bloggers, led by well-known mom bloggers Melissa Garcia, the “money-saving” Consumer Queen, and Courtney Velasquez of Giftfully Simple, will hit stores on Black Friday and upload photos and tips through Whrrl to My Black Friday Deals.

Visitors are encouraged to check the website throughout the days leading up to Black Friday and then all day, Friday November 27th, 2009 to find the best deals at nationwide chains and local stores, and to find the best prices on the biggest shopping day of the year. Visitors can vote for the deals they like the best, and the participating blogger with the most votes on a deal will receive Google Analytics training or tech/design assistance for his or her blog.

“We wanted to integrate a strong social media campaign to show the power that the average person or blogger has to reach so many others,” said John Andrews, Managing Partner of Collective Bias. “By working with bloggers, Whrrl and social media sites, we can effectively spread this idea like wildfire.”

My Black Friday Deals will also be promoted through channels like Flickr, YouTube, Twitter and Facebook to reach a wider audience.

I am Featured Mom Mapper

I got an amazing opportunity, I am a Featured Mom Mapper on MomMaps.com.

Mom Maps is a new iPhone application that helps you find kid friendly locations when you are on the go! It contains an extensive list of Parks, Playgrounds, Restaurants, Museums and Indoor Play Areas that are kid friendly and fun. Using GPS – You’ll see results which are close to you, plus a map to get you there.

Presently the Mom Maps iPhone application only serves the San Francisco Bay Area, but I am told by the application’s creators (both moms BTW) that they plan to launch new cities weekly going forward.

If you haven’t yet entered in a kid-friendly spot or a review I suggest you give it a try – You never know, your picture could be on the homepage next!

Still not convinced? Presently Mom Maps is running a contest – just enter in five or more kid-friendly locations (or review existing locations) and be entered in a drawing for a $100 Amazon gift certificate. This contest ends on 10/15/09 at 12pm PST so I suggest you act fast. Click here to enter and/or see additional details.

Full Discloser: Mom Maps was kind enough to provide me with a promo code to download their iPhone application. Once I tried it, I was so impressed with the application and the two moms that built it, I offered to help promote their application without any form of compensation.

I am the Newest Mommy Blogger Featured on Walmart.com!

For the remainder of my pregnancy I will be writing a weekly article that will appear on Walmart.com as well as continuing to update this site as well.

My first posting was just published and can be found here.

I’m very excited to share my experiences with the community, but more importantly, I could really use your thoughts and advice as my only experience to date comes from a half dozen baby books and some advice from friends. Not only am I a new mom, but it has been almost 20 years since I attempted to change a diaper and without your help I might possibly diaper the wrong end.

So please take a brief moment to visit the Baby Buzz Blog on Walmart.com and contribute to the community by leaving a comment, answering the poll, or one of the many questions myself as well as the other new and expectant moms have posted.

I can’t wait to hear your advice as well as answer any questions you may have as I prepare for this important journey. Thank you!

The Motrin Ad that Twitter Killed

This weekend Twitter was a buzz with upset consumers over the “Mortin ad”. Even as I write this on Monday morning the two top trending topics on Twitter search are Motrin and Motrinmoms.

The advertisement reads as follows:

Wearing your baby seems to be in fashion.
I mean, in theory it’s a great idea.
There’s the front baby carrier, sling, schwing, wrap, pouch.
And who knows what else they’ve come up with. Wear your baby on your side, your front, go hands free.
Supposedly
, it’s a real bonding experience.
They say that babies carried close to the bod tend to cry less than others.
But what about me? Do moms that wear their babies cry more than those who don’t?
I sure do!
These things put a ton of strain on your back, your neck, your shoulders. Did I mention your back?!
I mean, I’ll put up with the pain because it’s a good kind of pain; it’s for my kid.
Plus, it totally makes me look like an official mom.
And so if I look tired and crazy, people will understand why.
Motrin – We feel your pain.

I am not a mother (yet) and even I found the advertisement to be in poor taste. Although many are debating if the advertisement is offensive or not most people can agree that it is tacky. I for one am happy to see that the people at McNeil Consumer Healthcare are taking the backlash seriously and will be pulling the advertisement:

McNeil Consumer Healthcare Responds to Amy Gates, Crunchy Domestic Goddess. Amy posted the email:

Dear Amy -

I am the Vice President of Marketing for McNeil Consumer Healthcare. I have responsibility for the Motrin Brand, and am responding to concerns about recent advertising on our website. I am, myself, a mom of 3 daughters.

We certainly did not mean to offend moms through our advertising. Instead, we had intended to demonstrate genuine sympathy and appreciation for all that parents do for their babies. We believe deeply that moms know best and we sincerely apologize for disappointing you. Please know that we take your feedback seriously and will take swift action with regard to this ad. We are in process of removing it from our website. It will take longer, unfortunately, for it to be removed from magazine print as it is currently on newstands and in distribution.

Note to Motrin: Check out what @ComcastCares has been doing via Twitter; you might want to implement something along the same lines. I have a feeling this would not have blown up the way it did if there was human face that was able to engage consumers prior to the Twitterstorm starting.

Update: Babywearing international sent a response to concerning the Motrin mom-alogue campagin that I feel sums up the issues nicely. Motrin has also posted an Apology on their website.

It has Been a Long Time.

I have to admit I never thought I would blog again. Don’t get me wrong I wanted to; matter of fact less than two years ago I even talked to Clay Newton about it. Hell, I even got so jazzed that I set up a Vox account and then… (fizzle). I never posted a single thing. At that time I convinced myself that I didn’t need to “blog” mostly because I remembered all the very good reasons I stopped blogging in the first place:

  1. My family hated me: it not a good idea to talk trash about your family on your blog; especially if you are young, stupid and rude. Believe it or not you may hurt your mom’s feeling and seriously regret what you wrote later.
  2. No one would date me: sure at first it might sound like a turn on to have your love life read like a soap opera but guys have sensitive egos and remember I was young, stupid and rude.
  3. I am not a good writer: although I have always hoped to improve this weakness I haven’t; so go ahead grammar queens don’t hold back feel free to call out all the typos and improper usage in the nice “comment” section.
  4. It just took too much freakin’ time: It did! Back in the day we didn’t have this fancy blog software. Hell it wasn’t even called a blog; we called it a website and we actually had to know HTML.

So less than two years ago; I decided I would feed my social bug via Twitter, Facebook and Flickr. This had suited me just fine until last Friday when the company I work for launched www.elevenmoms.com. As a result, I spent the entire weekend reading mommy/daddy blogs and suprised myself by finding a wealth of information I had been craving.

So here I go again – attempting to blog. Now that I am married (five years this month) and trying to start a family; I hope to no longer be stupid or rude (young is another story).
