Fun in the Arizona Sun: How to attend Spring Training with an infant and not lose your cool.

Last week we headed down to take in a little spring training and bask in the balmy yet beautiful Arizona weather. It was going to be a quick trip and I didn’t want to deal with checking luggage. During the planning process I was concerned with three things, the heat, the sun and the lack of refrigeration to keep my homemade baby food from spoiling.

This was going to be the first time we had traveled since Ivey started on solids and all of the sudden she didn’t seem as portable as when she was purely on the boob. Luckily with a little research I found three products that settled my concerns.

Nourish Spill-Proof Bottled Water
Using these spill-proof bottles of water with a sippy top I was able to quickly navigate  through security without any hassle. They were not only great for the airport but once at the ball park Ivey was able to sip the water and stay hydrated.

Sweet P’s – Organic Jojoba Sun Block
I was fearful that the whole family would be burnt to a crisp after a day in the Arizona sun. Luckily this organic sun block kept us all protected and gave me peace of mind since it doesn’t contain any of the chemicals found in other sun blocks.

Organic Baby Food from Ella’s Kitchen
Up until this trip I had been making all of Ivey’s baby food. This has not only saved us money but it allowed me control over the quality of ingredients. When I came across the organic baby food from Ella’s Kitchen I was not only impressed with the quality of the ingredients but the the cleaver packaging was extremely travel friendly.

Full Discloser: Nourish and Ella’s Kitchen was kind enough to provide me with a few samples for this trip but I will continue to purchase these products as I travel in the future.

Baby Food – Carrots with Coconut Butter

I started off by peeling and chopping two bunches of fresh organic carrots. I placed the chopped carrots in the steamer for 15 minutes until tender. I threw the steamed carrots, some water and two well rounded tablespoons of raw coconut butter into the blender. I then pureed until smooth.

I served it lukewarm and stored the extra in two Fresh Baby trays which will provide us plenty of leftovers for the coming weeks.

Tip: carrots are more nutritious when cooked with a little fat since it helps the beta-carotene in the carrots absorb more readily.

How to Make Baby Food: Peas

We decided to start Ivey on peas today. Instead of buying fresh local peas and spending time removing them from their pods I cheated and purchased frozen organic Peas from Columbia River Organics. Please note: when buying frozen peas make sure to carefully read the package I was surprised to find out that many contain salt (a big no-no for baby food).

I placed both bags of peas in a pot and added about a cup of water. I brought it to a boil.

Once it started to boil I turned the heat down. I stirred, covered it and waited until it was heated through.

I then quickly blended it up with this great blender.

After Ivey and I had a nice helping of peas we still had enough to fill two Fresh Baby trays – providing us plenty of leftovers for the coming weeks.

How to Make Baby Food: Apples and Pears

We decided to start Ivey on apples and pears today. I bought the best fresh local organic apples and pears I could find. I peeled them, removed the core and then cut the fruit into small chunks.

I placed all the cut apple and pears into a pot and added roughly two cups of water. I found it hard to tell how much water to add since the fruit were pretty ripe and therefore juicy. I brought the pot to a boil and cooked the fruit with the lid on until it was fork tender which only took a few minutes.

I then quickly blended it up with this great blender.

After Ivey and I had a nice helping we still had enough to fill four Fresh Baby trays – providing us plenty of leftovers for the coming weeks. I was surprised that Ivey didn’t go crazy for this. So far she seems to like vegetables over fruits.

How to Introduce Sippy Cups and Solids

After Ivey grabbed a piece of pizza off my plate and tried to put it in her mouth I realized the inevitable.  The time has come to start feeding her solids. To be honest, I have been avoiding this step. Breast milk creates little mess and even the poop smells kinda sweet.

With solids comes sticky fingers, additional baths and worst of all odoriferous poop. I really dislike odoriferous poop.

In preparation for this milestone we have purchased the following:

And now for the results:

Discloser: All of the above mentioned products were purchased with my own hard earned money, except the Fisher Price Healthy Care Booster Seat, which was a baby shower gift from my second cousin Andy. Thanks again cousin Andy!
