Here is to a World with Less Cancer & More Birthdays

I feel lucky to have a large extended family. Thanks to second marriages and long lives I have had the amazing opportunity to embrace well over a dozen grandparents and great grandparents. No matter how large or small of a part they played in my childhood, ALL of them have impacted and shaped my life in some way or another.

That being said, I have always longed for my Grandma Maudell’s embrace.

Maudell

In 1962 they didn’t know much about Cancer. My grandma turned 30 that year and after spending several months in the hospital she passed away on March 28th.

My mother’s eleventh birthday was the day after. I am pretty sure she didn’t have a party that year.

I would have loved to have met my grandma. To hug her and create memories. Missing her has made me extremely grateful for the amazing relationship my daughters have with my mom. Their faces light up at the pure mention of their grandma.

I have been accussed of going a little overboard when it comes to the girls birthday parties. Honestly, I wouldn’t have it any other way. I want every birthday my daughters experience to be special. I also pray that they are all cancer free.

The American Cancer Society is celebrating twenty five years. Thanks to their efforts 11 million cancer survivors will celebrate another birthday this year. So let’s celebrate; here is to a world with less cancer and more birthdays.

Because Sometimes Life Stinks

urban
Unfortunately, it is not uncommon to walk through our very urban neighborhood and smell garbage, and even worse, human waste. Sorry to be gross but sometimes city living literally stinks!

To combat this we are constantly filling our home with scents from nature; and by nature I am not talking about PineSol and Lemon Pledge. I am talking about real honest to goodness nature as in NATURAL, because let’s face it nature makes perfect scents.

Some of my favorite natural aromas are lemon, grapefruit, ginger and lavender.

lavender
I LOVE the irresistible smell of lavender.

Did you know that lavender is proven to encourage sound sleep? And due to it sharp bright scent it also works as an energizer.

Its fragrance transports me to France where the sun surrounds me with a warm golden light. This dream like vision calms my mind and relaxes me after a hard day.

This is true if I am locking myself in the bathroom so I can soak in the tub for 30 minutes or just taking a few deep breaths with my eyes closed for 30 seconds before I quickly do the dishes. Either way, life is more relaxing and joyful when the scent of lavender fills the room.

What natural scents take you away from the daily grind? How do you use them and where do they take you?
