JCPenney – Let’s Face it Girls are Smarter

For anyone that missed it yesterday…
JCPenney quickly pulled a controversial shirt from its website that consumers declared “sexist.” The girls’ shirt reads: “I’m too pretty to do homework so my brother has to do it for me.”

The shirt was being marketed to girls between the ages of 7 and 16, for the price of $9.99. A caption next to photos of the shirt read: “Who has time for homework when there’s a new Justin Bieber album out? She’ll love this tee that’s just as cute and sassy as she is.”

You are what your wear:
The above shirt (on the right) was purchased for me without too much thought because an adult in my life thought it was cute & sassy. This shirt however, quickly became my most prized possession. In today’s world it might not be considered acceptable to empower a girl by putting down boys, but as a child of the 70′s, I loved this shirt. I loved it so much I barely took it off. This shirt gave me power. It gave me courage. This shirt gave me permission to go for it. Even today, some thirty years later, this picture still inspires me. I wonder where I would be today if my favorite shirt growing up read, “I’m too pretty to do homework”?

What have we learned from this in regards to social media?
What impresses me was how it was identified, how fast it spread and how quickly the company responded. Anyone remember how long it took Motrin to respond in 2008? I see improvement, and not just from the brands but how we engage with them. Huge kudos to Lauren Todd for putting up an online petition at Change.org it provided a place for the collective group to focus efforts.

If you were a designer, making a t-shirt for young girls, what saying would you put on it?

Five Fabulous Eco-Friendly Shopping Tips

When possible buy local and from the source
Locally made products and ingredients have a much lower environmental impact than purchasing the same thing from another continent.

Shop online
Buying online and using standard ground shipping reduces the environmental impact of shopping by utilizing about a third less energy than traditional retail.

Leave the car at home
If you live walking distance to your favorite stores or have access to public transportation consider leaving the car at home. Not only will you get your workout in, but since you can only buy what you can carry, it will help you from purchasing things that you don’t truly love.

Forgo the pretty packaging and spend the money on a higher quality product
Mainstream companies often spend more money on packaging then on the product itself. I often find that some of the best products aren’t in the prettiest packages and some of the earth friendliest products don’t come in any packaging at all.

Buy what you love and favor multipurpose products
If you only buy what you will actually use you will not only save money but reduce your overall waste. Also products that are multipurpose and/or can be utilized by multiple members of your family will help ensure the products don’t go to waste.

Do you have any eco-friendly shopping tips to share? I would love to add them to this list.

Ten More Sales = an Additional $1,000 for Faces of Tomorrow

WOW- totally new incentive to visit my shop!

The wonderful people at OpenSky have been beyond supportive in my effort to raise money for Faces of Tomorrow, and they decided to step up their support EVEN MORE. I’ve already made 20 sales this month (THANKS TO ALL OF YOU!!), and they just let me know if I reach 30 sales by the end of this month.. they’ll give and additional 1,000 BIG ONES to FOT!! Do you KNOW how many SMILES that provides (aside from mine…)

The best part is that it doesn’t JUST have to be necklace sales, it just has to be any product over $12. This makes me excited because I’ve got so many awesome products in my shop (course I love them, I put them there and use them all the time). So I wanted to go over a few of my ABSOLUTE favorites so that you can support FOT without having to purchase ONLY a necklace.

Here’s some of my favorites and why:
  • Sweet P’s Cactus Flower Hydrating Mist, I use this as a toner twice a day after I wash my face and before I moisturize. This product was created especially based on my request by the lovely Paula. It is wild crafted, organic and seriously hydrates your face!
  • Bottoms Up Baby Wipes, in my quest to remove as may toxins from our home as possible I have been replacing traditional disposable wipes with this great kit that is GOOD for the planet and GOOD for your baby. I love the smell and it is surprisingly convenient and easy to use.
  • Sweetsation – Organic SPF 30+ Sunscreen, It is not just for babies! This sunscreen is jam packed with kick butt ingredients making it a state of the art skin care pampering treatment for mom’s face and hands as well. Plus I love how it smells like YUMMY chocolate marshmallows.
  • Bilingual Birdies CD, Bilingual Birdies is an amazing foreign language music program (based in New York) whose mission is to teach cross-cultural understanding, compassion and curiosity through foreign language and music. My daughter loves to clap and bounce around when we play this CD. I am sure your child will love it as well!
