Ever So Marketed Proactiv, Meet Your Match: Lotus Moon’s Blemish Control Gel

Congrats Makeover Momma! I’ve selected your product submission for my Product Replacement Challenge.

Here’s the submission: Proactiv Repairing Lotion

Makeover Momma uses it twice a day with the claim that it keeps her from breaking out. Could be true. But that doesn’t make it GOOD for her or the environment and there are options with fewer toxins and equal (or better!) results.

So here goes: Proactiv, what a perfect example to start with. This is one (if not the most infamous) of those over-marketed lines, that is a miracle for some and a nightmare for others. From the standpoint of toxic ingredients-, Proactiv is a nightmare, one that just won’t go away, especially after you know what is in it.

First let’s look at the ingredients (The super big words that companies know the average consumer knows nothing about, but I do… and that’s why you love my new program)

The REALLY yucky ones are highlighted in red… as in danger :)
benzoyl peroxide 2.5%, water (aqua), ethoxydiglycol, cyclotetrasiloxane, propylene glycol, cetearyl alcohol, dimethicone, glyceryl stearate, PEG-100 stearate, cyclopentasiloxane, panthenol, allantoin, xanthan gum, ceteareth-20, carbomer, triethanolamine, diazolidinyl urea, methylparaben, propylparaben, fragrance (parfum).

Let’s be honest. It doesn’t take an exploratory and concerned woman (me) to see there is nothing natural about these over-processed ingredients. There’s nothing that even sounds natural let alone organic. This Proactiv product (like all the others in the line) is clearly packed full of ingredients you should avoid.

Here is a silly but true test. Would you dab a dime size of this on your tongue? I most certainly wouldn’t, especially considering the warning label actually says, “keep away from eyes, lips and mouth”.  Now here’s a fact; skin is the body’s largest organ and absorbs 60% of the ingredients YOU place on it. You know the saying you are what you eat? Well, guess what ladies… YOU are what you put on your skin as well.

Okay, so let’s look at the complete ingredient list of MY PRESCRIPTION: Lotus Moon’s Blemish Control Gel
aqua (water), *alcohol denat., glycolic acid (5%), *glycerin, salicylic acid (3%), hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, sodium chloride, hydrolyzed yeast protein, pyridoxine hcl, niacinamide, panthenol, allantoin, biotin, mentha piperita (peppermint) oil, ascorbic acid (l), glutathione (l), *lavandula angustifolia (lavender) oil. *usda certified organic

Notice how NOTHING is highlighted in red?

Okay I might not actually eat this product for lunch, but since it is free of the toxic ingredients on my list I feel this product is definitely a GOOD replacement for the Proactiv product.

I know the word acid might sound scary at first but, acids like glycerin, glycolic, and salicylic are actually natural biles that thin out the oil that your skin may be over producing. Plus this product packs plenty of B vitamins (pyridoxine hcl, niacinamide, panthenol, and biotin) to help regulate your sebum production going forward.

But does the Lotus Moon Blemish Control Gel deliver the results?
YES! After personally testing the Lotus Moon’s Blemish Control Gel for roughly a week and previously using Proactiv’s Repairing Lotion for several years in my 20′s (glad those days are over) I feel that Lotus Moon product does the same, if not better. Prior to testing I had a HUGE zit (no grace here, this is serious skin care talk) that quickly vanished as well as congestion I have been harboring around my t-zone. I enjoyed testing this product so much that I am personally going to incorporate it into my beauty routine on an as need basis. The only notable difference is the texture of the two products, which is more about a personal preference than results (Proactiv is a lotion whereas Lotus Moon is a gel). I honestly I prefer the feeling of the gel – I feel it glides on smoother and doesn’t leave a visible almost chalky film like I experienced with Proactiv.

Makeover Momma- I want day to day updates of your results!

What about the price?
Proactiv’s Repairing Lotion retails for $22.00(2 oz.) whereas Lotus Moon’s Blemish Control Gel sells for $37.00 (1 oz.). I do feel however that you get a bigger bang for your buck with the Lotus Moon product and have to use less actual product to get the desired result.

About this series:
I am convinced that if someone can give me the name of a mainstream brand they are using and why they like it – I can, and will locate a product replacement that is better for them as well as our environment. Do you have a product you would like to submit for replacement? Find out more here.

Sweet P’s Organic Baby Care

Several months ago I was introduced to Paula, the creator of Sweet P’s, though my friend and fellow blogger, Shane who runs Environmental Booty. Are you familiar with the idiom “cut from the same cloth? Well, that is how I feel about both Shane and Paula. The three of us seem to have quite a bit in common and although we are literally scattered across the country (California, Arizona, Florida) I feel a kinship that seems to transcend these geographical barriers.

As soon as us three girls start talking “products” I feel giddy. As moms, we all feel a burning desire to use and support products free of toxins especially the products we use on our kids. This common thread is the catalyst behind this new Sweet P’s line.

Shane has been a long time supporter of Sweet P’s but it wasn’t until the three of us started talking that Paula decided to package up her products in a specific baby care bundle and sell them in both Shane and my stores. I love that Paula took this as an opportunity to collaborate and incorporated our feedback into the design. For example, I felt it was important that the bottles be small enough (40z) to be  easily held in one hand – let’s face it, as a mom you are lucky to have one had free let alone two.

OrganicBabyCareSetHere is a break down of what is included in the bundle and why I like it…

Cloud Powder:
Since talc is mined the same areas as asbestos it is important to used powder that is talc-free. Sweet P’s Cloud Powder is made with a zinc oxide formula (not nanomil) and corn starch. Zinc oxide has been formulated with skin ointments for centuries and traditionally is formulated with ointments for a variety of skin conditions. Zinc is also  very effective as a way to control the growth of bacteria and yeast. However with any powder DO NOT dust near face your babies face to ensure that the dust is not inhaled. To make this product even more environmentally friendly the container is refillable and you will be able order refills of Cloud Powder from Sweet P’s Skincare.

Baby Head to Toe Bubbles:
This head-to-toe formula is loaded with botanical extracts and is biodegradable. Although this is not a “No Tears Formula” it is phosphate free, SLS free, contains no DEA, and no parabens. This product is perfect for the whole family and refills can be easily purchased from Sweet P’s Skincare.

Organic JojoBaby Oil:
Structurally the closest thing to you skin’s own nature oil is 100% Certified Organic Jojoba Oil. This oil is free of scent and loaded with naturally contained anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties. Feel comfortable soothing dry patches and removing crud behind ears while applying an organic oil free of pesticides. Got cradle cap? Add a few drops to your baby’s scalp before shampooing. This product is loaded with the best that nature has to offer and is great for the whole family. Refills can be easily purchased from Sweet P’s Skincare.

Organic Bottom Butter:
This simply wonderful and effective bottom ointment is crafted by blending 100% Certified Organic Shea Butter and zinc oxide. This kit includes a jar for home as well as a travel tin for your diaper bag! This product protects, heals and has a high content of Vitamin A, E & F. It melts on body contact and is readily absorbed.

OrganicBabyCareSetPackaging

Packaging:
One of the reasons I think this makes such a great baby shower gift is that these products packaged in two 100% cotton muslin bags (one for home and one for travel). Also the art work on this product is really adorable and I love that it was created by Paula herself!

Perfect Personal Product Prescriptions – Let’s feel beautiful together!

I started writing about beauty products as a way to keep you, your baby and the environment safe, healthy and feeling your best – and in realizing how fulfilled I’ve felt from doing so, I’ve decided to start a new program! In weeding through the marketing scams and the over-hyped, over-priced products for my own family, I’ve become so unbelievably passionate about avoiding as many toxic ingredients in my skin care routine as possible, and I am excited to share this new-found knowledge with others (namely my readers, like you!)

Recently my friend Stacy, asked advice on her “cupcake” lotion. She paid too much for the scent and the brand name, especially considering the low quality and harmful substances that it’s made of. As she read me the ingredients I nearly fell to the floor! I found myself running to my repertoire of product research and prescribed an entire new moisturizing routine.

So this is where the new program comes in. I would LOVE for you to send me your routine (products you use and love, or use and hate). I will look beyond the label and do some research. I will see if you’re doing yourself help or harm and then, I will “prescribe” a personalized solution that is better for you and the environment than your current product.

For the second part of this idea, bring in OpenSky. I’ve always wanted my own boutique so I can be around the products I love – all day long. When I was approached by OpenSky to have my own shop online, I was floored! Now I can have my own personal space, to sell my own personal favorite things to my own personal favorite readers (that’s you.. again).

So here is the challenge:

Step 1: Go get your “favorite” product.  Look at the full list of ingredient in your skin care product and see if it contains any of the following…

  1. Parabens
  2. Formaldehyde (often listed as 2-bromo-2nitropropane-1, 3-diol, diazolidinyl urea, DMDM hydantion, imidazolidinyl urea, quaternium-15)
  3. Phthalates (not listed on the label. Look for the word “fragrance” or if the product specific says “phthalate-free”)
  4. Diethanolamne (DEA) and Triethanolamine (TEA)
  5. Diazolidinya Urea and Imidazolidinyl Urea
  6. Sodium Lauryl/Laureth sulfate; Ammonium Laureth Sulphate
  7. Propylene Glycol
  8. PVP/VA copolymer
  9. Nanoparticles
  10. Synthetic Fragrance

Step 2: Now that you are aware of all the ingredients in your product make a conscience decision if you are willing to replace it with a healthier solution.

Step 3: In the comments of this post leave the following:

  • Name of your current product
  • A URL where I can find the product
  • Describe what you like about the product (i.e. smell, feel, results, etc.)

Once you submit your product you will receive an email from me letting you know I am on the case. I will then post the solution to my blog and email you the link. It’ll be so fun for all of us!

The Perfect Baby Shower Gift for all my Girlfriends

The FDA regulates what we put in our mouths but what about ingredients we absorb through our skin? Studies have found evidence that babies may be absorbing chemicals such as phthalates (pronounced THA-lates) through their shampoo, lotion and powder. To make matters worse legally these ingredients don’t even have to appear on the label!

This why my new favorite baby shower gift is this Organic Baby Care Set from Sweet P’s.

I know Paula Morris, the creator of Sweet P’s, puts love and attention into every single one of her organic products. With Paula as the creator, I never have to worry about her ingredients being unsafe. This is why I not only use these products but I proudly give them to my girlfriends.

This Organic Baby Care Set comes packaged in two 100% Cotton Muslin Bags (one set is the baby’s home bag & the other set is the baby’s on the go bag) and includes the following items:

  1. JojoBaby Oil-100% Certified 4oz Jojoba Oil
  2. Baby Bottom Butter-one 2 oz Home jar & one 2 oz Travel tin
  3. Cloud No Talc Baby Powder-5 oz shaker plus mini travel
  4. Head to Toe Cleansing Bubbles-4oz

So I ask you, what type of products are you willing to use on your baby?

Eco-Friendly Organic One Minute Manicure – Perfect for Moms

handI used to be a big fan of a specific product called One Minute Manicure. It lived up to its name by literally giving me a naturally looking manicure in one minute. So why am I no longer a fan? I realized that this natural looking product was actually full of nasty toxic parabens such as isopropylparaben, isobutylparaben, and butylparaben which aren’t good for me or our environment.

Luckily I have found something the works even better. Not only does this combination of products provide a better result but because these products are organic they are free of nasty toxins.

Step 1: Grab a small dollop of this Organic Brown Sugar Scrub and rub it into your DRY hands while holding them over the sink. Don’t forget to pay extra attention to your cuticles!

Step 2: Rinse your hands with water and pat dry with a towel.

Step 3: Since hands often age faster than the other parts of your body; apply a dime size amount of Golden Mica Organic Shea Butter Facial SunBlock (SPF 30). This will provide you the sun protection you need to keep your hand looking young and healthy. Plus the golden mica bounces the light off your skin and makes you look young and radiant.

Additional Tip: One of my favorite things about Sweet P’s products is how multi-purpose and reasonably priced they are which means you can easily repeat the above steps on your feet, face and rest of your body.
