Prior to becoming an associate at my first fortune 500 company a friend and former client provided me with the following list. This list is as true today as it was when I first received it years ago.

  1. Keep an up to date status sheet
  2. Report up by having an official touch base with your management once a week
  3. Never report a problem without a solution
  4. Never think your solution is the only way
  5. Don’t be afraid to ask questions
  6. Ask questions in simple ways
  7. Listen first ask questions second
  8. Write down the name of the people you meet (and hear about) look them up on the corporate directory & find out who they report to
  9. Introduce yourself to someone weekly and acquaint them with you and your role
  10. Process is missing everywhere, collaborate to determine the process and then document it

That was a great friend to give you that list. For anybody who has to figure this stuff out on their own, you can do it, but it would have been so much better to know going in at the beginning. Great share.

Those are good points, but I need to ask two important question. How do you balance those acts without being slave to them? How do the duties in your list factor into building a political presense in a large corporation?
